I'm not finished with colorful flags quite yet...

This is a photo that Mike took in Pittsburgh that I can't stop thinking about. I want to recreate this in a gallery with solenoids that make the flags bounce up and down. Maybe this will be the continuation of A Grand Opening for Gravity...

"One Minute Sculptures" by Erwin Wurm

I saw (and loved) these photos in a show in Madrid called "Between Times: Instants, intervals, durations", which was part of PhotoEspana:

I've recently discovered that in some circumstances the work is also shown in an interactive way:

"Visitors can become objects of art by holding a variety of household items in Erwin Wurm's One Minute Sculptures (2006)... These works suggest that "participation" is when art and audience are in a symbiotic relationship, mutually calling each other into being and giving each other purpose. And it cannot be an audience of just one; there has to be a crowd/collective/community for the works to find form."

I spoke to a friend who saw this interactive version of the show and she said people actually did participate (I was skeptical, thinking that people might be shy). She said they were nervous at first, having to step on the pedestal and become the art, but all it took was for one person to grab an object and do something silly, and then everyone else followed suit. Erwin Wurm is now my hero.

The video is almost done! We took 1800 pictures of it over a period of 12 hours which will be made into a stop-motion animation. Hopefully sooner than later....

This picture is of an installation at the Crystal Palace by Kimsooja. She covered all the windows with diffraction grating film (which makes rainbows!) and all the floors with mirrors.

the art blog

The Eternity piece and our 500-minute long exhibition on First Friday in Philadelphia got a little write up on the art blog, a great resource for current art events and reviews of exhibitions in the Philly area. Even though people had to climb up six flights of stairs on a crazy hot and humid night, a ton of people came to see all the clock hands fall into place at exactly 8pm. Peoples' response to the work was overwhelmingly positive. My inflatable self-portrait also provided some comic entertainment. I'll be posting a video of Eternity shortly....

"The word “three” completely appears when it’s exactly 3 o’clock and will then transform again as time passes. The word “four” begins to appear and at exactly 4 o’clock the word “four” is clearly visible. The word “three” is by then totally vanished and no longer readable."

Opening in Philadelphia on June 4th: In No Time!

Mike Fleming and I are debuting our "Eternity" piece for one night only - next Friday in Philadelphia at Progressive Sharing, a gallery on the 6th floor of the warehouse building at 319 N. 11th Street in Philadelphia. The exhibition will last exactly 300 minutes. Eternity will last one split second. Come to see it fall into place at exactly 8PM!

a mountain of emotion

This one of those works of art that was able to move me to tears when I first encountered it in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It's something I still think about when I'm feeling sad or frustrated. The piece is a diptych- two videos shown side by side on flat screen monitors mounted to the wall - and the other video is of a woman. They are both shown in a highly emotional state, which builds and eventually climaxes with simultaneous screams, all in silence and slow motion, separate but together. My favorite part of this one video is the look of relief on his face when he first stops screaming.
